Book Review: The Dangerous Days of Daniel X

I read James Patterson's The Dangerous Days of Daniel X for MotherTalk. I was really excited about this book when I first heard about it. It was written to be a gateway book for boys. Get more boy reading, ones who say that there is nothing good to read or that it is boring. I have a younger brother who just turned 15 (I am still in denial) and he would much rather play video games or brush his teeth than read a book.

Being a veritable book fiend who finds it her job in life to turn everyone on to reading even if they already read a lot, I took it upon myself to find books that he would like to read. It started with Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. He gobbled those up faster than I could buy them. Then I found The Edge Chronicles, again gobbled them up. Would read a 400+ page book in a few days. Wanted to read it before I did. I had to wait to read my own book. We found a couple other series we liked and I would buy so he could read and reread at will, but that was it. He only ever read what I gave him. His assigned school reading often went undone b/c he didn't like it.

I am hoping this book/series will be another one that he will gobble up.

Now to talk about the actual book...

I couldn't put it down. Sometimes I had to b/c I do have an almost 10 month old to feed and change diapers for. I finally stayed up until almost 2am so I could finish reading it. I hadn't planned it that way. I was tired and decided to only read a chapter or two. But then I wanted to know what happened next. The chapters are pretty small so I can read another one, I'll stop after one more. One more led to one more to one more to one more. Then I was done. I was completely drawn in. I couldn't get enough. I was mad to see that I had reached the end of the story. I thought for sure there was more b/c there was still a lot of pages left. Oh no, teasers for upcoming books I guess. It is perfect parts superhero, normal boy, awesome friends and bad guys getting what's coming to them. I am mailing it to my brother as soon as I can.
